What Almonds Look Like on the Tree & On the Farm

I’ve had friends who’s families grow pecans but almonds are not something we grow down south. And even though I had seen almonds before, I hadn’t had the chance to talk about the basics of growing almonds — that’s where Brent Boersma enters! Brent and his family have the fourth generation Boersma Farms near Ripon, California where they grow several hundred acres of almonds.

    It’s an almond tree

I found an answer. And I didn’t even know there was a mystery.

Near my house, on the way to my trails, are some pine trees. A few years ago my person noticed some blossoms peeking out from between the pines. Pine trees don’t have blossoms and my person thought this looked pretty cool. She even made me stop while she took pictures of them. But that was as far as it went. The only mystery I could find was why my person stopped and took pictures every year.
But this year something else happened. The tree grew fruit.
Now that tree had green, puny, split fruit.
My person said she knew what this fruit was and she never even got her Detective Person hat.

Oh nuts. It’s not fruit at all. It’s an almond tree.

    How to Grow Almond Trees

Almond trees are native to south Asia and the Middle East. Almond trees are in the same genus as peaches and plums, making them closely related but distinctly different from those popular fruits. The almond itself is a drupe, with an outer shell over a hard seed coat that contains the almond. If the pit of a peach is cracked, the peach seed resembles an almond. Many native almond trees in Asia are bitter due to a high level of cyanide in the seed. The sweet almond we enjoy today is the results of centuries of selection.

    Where do almonds grow?

Almonds mostly grow in Mediterranean climates located between 28 and 48 degrees north latitude and between 20 and 40 degrees south latitude. Southwestern Asia is the native region of the almond tree, but about 80 percent of the world's almond supply comes from California.

The Weird Ways That Nuts Grow

The fuzzy green almond fruit appears in early summer, and by July it begins to split open. By October, the split widens and allows the almond nut to dry out.
