    Love those deliciously nutty pods of edamame beans you get in Japanese restaurants, but frustrated you can’t grow them in the UK? Well I think I have gone one better with super easy-to-grow chickpea ‘edamame’!

    Chick pea, is scientifically known as Cicer arietinum, it is an annual that belongs to the legume family, and is also known by the names Garbanzo or Gram.

    Pods are ready to harvest when they are slightly hard to the touch, but still a bright, fresh green. Brown papery pods with contain starchy dried up seeds. You should even be able to judge the size of them by holding them up to the light.

    The chickpea, Cicer arietinum, is a leguminous annual plant in the family Fabaceae grown for its edible seeds. The plant has a branched, straight or bending stem with small feathery leaves arranged alternately on the stem.

    I prepared a simple salad with the young green chickpeas and mache lettuce flavored and added a little roasted coriander with fresh lemon juice. Young green chickpeas are creamier and frankly in many ways.

    This find from a Salem, Oregon, supermarket may be nothing new to the Californians and Southwesterners among my readers, but it got me excited: fresh garbanzos, fully grown but still green and in the pod.
