How to Grow Turnips: Planting, Growing and Harvesting Turnips

    How to Grow Turnips

You see, turnips are pretty chill when it comes to soil, weather and the like, but, there are a few important notes worth knowing about this great root vegetable and why each and every one of you should grow it in your garden or add a sneaky dash of it to your mashed potatoes. Call me crazy, but I’m calling turnip the new kale.

How to Cook Turnips and Their Greens

Turnips are a vegetable people love to hate.  This is something that I don’t understand, because I think they are awesome. They are cheap, easy to cook, easy to grow, and just like beets, you get two tasty vegetables in one.  Turnip greens are actually one of my favorite of the winter greens, and they are particularly tasty in soups.  Turnip root can be used just like any root vegetable.

    Why You Should Grow Turnips

Autumn is upon us, and the garden has been generous so far this season. For the past three or four weeks we have been regularly harvesting greens, but now the time has finally come for something a bit more substantial. The first turnips of the season are ready to pull! Yes, we have cheated by mixing a few turnip leaves in with the collard greens. We enjoy the potency that turnip tops add to the mix. Now the roots will be a welcome addition to the menu.

    How To Grow Turnip

Varieties: Purple Top White Globe, Green Globe, York Globe
Sunlight: Full sun, i.e. 6-8 hours of direct exposure to sunlight is required for optimum growth of the turnip plant.
Water: Regular watering intervals, i.e. make sure that the soil is always moist and well-drained.

How To Grow The Perfect Turnip

Combine rich soil and cool temperatures to grow the ideal turnip. Fast-growing turnips thrive in cool temperatures; hot weather makes the leaves tough and the roots woody and bitter. Ample moisture and temperatures of 50 to 70 degrees encourage rapid growth and a high-quality crop. You can enjoy these quick-growing crops either raw or cooked and can eat the roots or the tops, making them a versatile and much-needed addition to your vegetable garden.

    Growing Turnips for a Comeback

For millennia, the turnip was one of the most popular vegetables out there, and for good reason. While potatoes have more or less cornered the market in the last hundred years, the delightful turnip’s versatility, hardiness and nutritional value are worthy of consideration.
