Growing and cooking achocha
Achocha, Cyclanthera pedata
Last year I grew Achocha, Cyclanthera pedata, for the first
time, on my allotment and in the Grapes Hill Community Garden in Norwich. The
seeds came from Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library.
Swapping for Achocha Seeds
Six months ago I popped by An Urban Veg Patch, and was
fascinated to find out about a South-American vegetable I’d never heard of
before, the Achocha. With fruit known as ‘Fat Babies’, this prolific plant
grows in a cucumber-like vine and produces soft-spiked pods that taste like
green peppers. However unlike peppers, the Achocha can be easily grown outdoors
in the UK.

Achocha – Know It, Grow It!
Please correct me if I am wrong however I believe these
specimens are Fat Baby (Cyclanthera brachystachya) noted for their soft fleshy
spines. Achocha is one of the lost crops of the Incas.
Achocha, a herbaceous vigorous vine is one of the very
rarely sown vegetables in Europe. To Croatia it was brought only few years back
and it still doesn't even have a name, although some call it "wild
cucumber".
