How to Grow Fresh Acerola, Barbados Cherry In Your Garden

    How to Grow Cherries

Give either or both cherry trees a sunny spot, preferably with a lot of southern sun exposure. Avoid cold valleys where frost can destroy your harvest.

    Planting, Growing, and Harvesting Cherries

Sweet cherries are the ones most often found in markets. They have a thick, rich, and almost plumb-like texture. Sweet cherries grow in zones 5 to 7; they are self-sterile and best for an orchard or a large garden. You’ll need at least two or three trees so that they can pollinate each other.

The Cherry Tree Guild and Natural Pest Control

Cherry trees are a good choice for home fruit production, but pests can sometimes be a problem. Here’s how we planted our cherry trees using a permaculture guild – a combination of plants that works together to produce more healthy cherries.

The harvest that makes it all worth it

We got a little over 2 pounds of fruit in our first harvest year (2012). Surprisingly, the birds were more interested in the cherry tree pests (see below) than they were in the cherries, but you may need to net your trees to get a harvest. I like the idea of leaving one tree for the birds and harvesting from the others, then rotating the “giving” tree each year.

How to Grow Bing Cherry Trees in Arizona

Though I have attempted to grow cherries in Southern Arizona, my Bing planted at 2 years old died at age 6 of a rot. I was able to get 2 cherry crops. Follow the notes on fungus control with dormant oil and you shouldn't have that problem.

    How To Grow Barbados Cherry

When I was growing up I remember eating the acerola vitamin C chewables. They reminded me of a sweet tart. Well, little did I know then, that one day I would be growing a tree/bush of the cherry they were made from. And what a wonderful fruit it is! The cherries are about the same size as the typical bing cherry we are used to, but slightly more acidic.

With Christmas just a whisker away, so is the season's cherry harvest - with commercial growers in Hawke's Bay and Central Otago praying for long spells of settled, dry weather over the coming month or two.

    How to harvest cherries

I've been picking, stemming, washing, pitting, and freezing cherries, off and on for a week now! And I have to admit, what started out as a fun endeavor has now turned to WORK!!!

Is this enough cherries for a few hours? Probably Not.
