How to Grow Blackberry, Planting, Growing and Harvesting Blackberry

    How to Grow Blackberries

There are four types of blackberries: thorny erect types (mainly wild), thorny trailing types, thornless trailing types, and thornless upright types.

Thorny blackberries have the best fruit quality but are less grown due to the annoyance of harvesting around thorns.

5 Reasons To Grow Triple Crown Thornless Blackberries

Make room in your yard for Triple Crown Thornless Blackberries (at least 1 but more is better!) and you will have access to some of the most amazing berries around.
I planted 3 bushes in an 8-ft. row three years ago just because they were thornless. Really – I didn’t know anything about the Triple Crown variety, but I wanted to replace some out-of-control super thorny blackberries that refused to die completely even after 3 years of being covered.

Growing blackberries in pots is so much easier than growing them in your garden because they can literally take over your yard! Before you start planting, choose a site that has full sun. The soil should be rich and drains well. When planting, place bushes 6 feet apart. If planting in rows, plant each row at least 8 feet apart. Crowding is never a good idea when planting any type of berry bush. Dig the hole about 8 inches deep, add the plant, and gently cover it with soil. There is no need to fertilize at this time, just do a generous initial watering.

One Hour’s Worth of Blackberry Picking

This is the time of year you’ll find me sneaking off to pick blackberries near our house! I’m more inclined to pick in a few short sessions versus an all day marathon. I find it’s less overwhelming – both in terms of my effort and processing the berries afterwards!

Planting: For best results, plant your blackberry bushes in early spring. Once your plants arrive soak roots in water for 3-6 hours. Remove any broken roots. Do not let roots get direct sun before planting. Although weird this can kill the plant. Dig a hole twice the size of the roots on plant. Space plants 2-4' apart and rows 4-6' apart. Shovel dirt back into hole and add organic matter.
